When your teeth show signs of decay or chips and breaks our team at Swinnow Dental can help to stop it before it starts to cause any pain. Filling material can be applied to the tooth to restore it back to its normal function.
Fillings
During your health check, one of our team has identified a small hole, crack or a defect in your teeth. This has the potential to cause pain and damage the nerves within the tooth irreversibly. A small filling is then recommended to remove the offending decay and seal the tooth. This will relive from sensitivity and reduce the need for endodontic treatment.
It is a straightforward process that requires one or maybe 2 appointments. This can be carried out by our dentist or hygiene therapists.
Here at Swinnow we strive to deliver dental excellence. As such we only offer composite restorations. We believe it is a superior material to silver fillings and as such do not offer them. In addition, the composite is tooth coloured and blends with the colour of your existing teeth.
Should you require a filling or another regular health check please contact us on 0113 2565214.
Why might I need a filling?

Fillings
When the nerves within the tooth has been damaged, it can cause severe tooth ache and require specilised root canal therapy. Our team at Swinnow Dental can provide the necessary treatment treat the pain whilst keeping your tooth.
Root canal therapy is required when the nerves within the tooth has been damaged irreversibly. This can happen due to long standing decay, deep fillings, or breaks in a tooth. You may experience severe pain, discomfort and infection from the tooth. If left untreated the tooth may be lost.
Endodontic (Root Canal) Treatment
Signs of Tooth infection
Excessive sensitivity from the tooth. Does the sensitivity linger after eating hot, cold or sweet foods?
Tooth ache during eating. Does the tooth cause pain when biting together on when pressure is applied to the tooth.
Darkening of your tooth. Has your tooth suddenly changed colour and become darker
Darkening of your tooth. Has your tooth suddenly changed colour and become darkerIs there a small gum in the gum next to the painful tooth. Is the gum tender or swollen?

Root canal treatment can be avoided by practicing good dental care. Regular health checks mean that our team is in a good position to pick up on any problems you may not have noticed. We will check any current fillings or crowns for damage or cracks. By treating issues in the early stages you avoid infections and further complications that would ultimately lead to endodontic treatment.
Tooth decay is one of the common reasons for root canal infections. You can keep tooth decay at bay by brushing and flossing regularly, chewing sugar-free gum between meals and reducing your intake of fizzy drinks and sugar in your diet.
If you are experiencing tooth pain, contact us at Swinnow Dental today on 0113 2565214 to see if you require root canal treatment.
How can I avoid root canal
Root canal treatment aims to remove the damaged nerves within the tooth and surrounding infection. We will aim to make you as comfortable as possible and to you it will feel like having a routine filling. Our team are highly skilled in proving excellent endodontic treatment. After the procedure, the tooth will be very vulnerable and require reinforcement. Therefore as part of your treatment a coverage such as an onlay or a crown will be provided.
What is involved?
Endodontic (Root Canal) Treatment
When a tooth has large restorations, showing cracks and requires reinforcement, an inlay/onlay is required. Our team at Swinnow Dental can provide these indirect restorations to enhance your teeth and give you peace of mind.
Inlay/Onlay
Why you may need a inlay/onlay?
You may require an onlay if there is insufficient amount of tooth left to repair. The tooth may already have a failing large restoration, have multiple cracks on it or may have have endodontic treatment. A regular filling will no longer provide enough protection for the tooth. An onlay will fill existing cavities and reinforce the tooth simultaneously.
Worn Teeth
Tooth wear is a gradual loss of your tooth structure due to causes other than decay or trauma. It can take years to occur and common amongst all ages. If left untreated it can lead to chipping of teeth, sensitivity, pain, inability to chew properly and ultimately an undesirable smile and loss of tooth. Fortunately here at Swinnow Dental our dentist will assess your rate of tooth-wear during our health checks and advise you on how to best manage it.
What are the signs of tooth-wear?
Teeth sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods
Flattened, chipped, or uneven teeth
Yellowing  of teeth as enamel wears down
Transparent edges of teeth
Changes in bite or jaw discomfort
The onlay is a very resilient restoration. They can be made from materials ranging from gold to ceramic to zirconia. They can be treated like a natural tooth. Whilst they do not require specific care, it is important to remember that your natural teeth can still suffer from the effects of decay and gum disease. Therefore good daily oral habits are essential and maintaining regular health checks will ensure longevity.
If you require inlays or onlays and would like further information, please contact us on 0113 256 5214.
How do I look after my onlay?
Delivery of an onlay usually requires 2 appointments. Your tooth will be reshaped conservatively in the first appointment and a digital scan will be taken of the tooth. You will no longer need difficult gag inducing impressions. A provisional restoration will be fitted to protect the tooth while the final onlay is being made. A week later, the onlay will be carefully bonded onto the tooth

How do you manage tooth-wear?
On your first visit, your dentist at Swinnow Dental will complete a comprehensive medical and dental assessment to determine any causes for tooth wear. We will use our latest technology, Primescan Digital Scanner, to create digital replicas of your teeth. This will be used to accurately monitor the rate of tooth wear. We will use these replicas to make protective guards for your teeth.
How do I repair my worn teeth?
Should your worn teeth leave you with difficulty eating or an undesirable smile, we can repair them and replace the teeth that is missing. We would carry out in depth analysis and shape and appearance of your new teeth. Using this we can rebuild your teeth using a choice of two materials:
Composite: resin based material that is bonded directly onto the tooth. It is a versatile material that can be applied quickly onto the tooth.
Ceramic: long- lasting hard wearing material that will enhance and reinforce the tooth. It will leave the tooth looking natural and reinforce the tooth to combat the causes of tooth-wear.
If you think you suffer from tooth wear and would like to consider your options to managing it, please feel free to contact us on 0113 256 5214 and arrange a consultation to discuss your options.
