SIGNS TO WATCH FOR

Small hole today. Bigger problem tomorrow.

Most fillings start as something small: a hole, crack or defect your dentist spots at a health check, often before you feel a thing. Left alone, decay works deeper into the tooth, where it can irreversibly damage the nerve. A small filling removes the decay and seals the tooth, relieving sensitivity and reducing the chance you will ever need root canal treatment. Book a filling appointment if you notice:

  • Sensitivity to hot, cold or sweet food and drink

  • A visible hole, dark spot or crack in a tooth

  • Food repeatedly catching in the same place

  • A chipped edge or a rough surface your tongue keeps finding

  • An old filling that feels loose, sharp or has come away

NO SILVER FILLINGS HERE

One material. The one we would choose ourselves.

At Swinnow Dental we only offer composite restorations. We believe composite is a superior material to silver amalgam, so we simply do not place silver fillings. Composite is tooth coloured and shade matched, so it blends with the colour of your existing teeth, and it bonds directly to the tooth surface. It works on front and back teeth alike, which is why a white filling from us looks like your tooth, not like dental work.

YOUR VISIT

In and out, usually in a single visit.

01

Examine and plan

Many fillings are spotted at a routine health check. If you have come in with a specific tooth in mind, we examine it, confirm what is needed and agree the exact price with you first.

02

Gentle preparation

The area is numbed with local anaesthetic, then the decay or damaged part of the tooth is carefully removed. Nervous patients are very welcome here, and sedation is available where appropriate.

03

Shade match and fill

Composite matched to your tooth colour is placed in layers, shaped to restore the natural contours of the tooth, then set firm.

04

Bite check and polish

We check your bite feels right, polish the filling smooth, and you are done. Most fillings are completed in one appointment, occasionally two.

RELATED TREATMENTS

The right repair for the amount of tooth left.

A filling is the right fix for smaller areas of damage. When more of the tooth is affected, we will talk you through the options honestly: a badly broken down or cracked tooth may need the extra strength of an inlay or onlay, and a tooth whose nerve is infected needs root canal treatment before it can be rebuilt. If a tooth is causing you real pain today, do not wait for a routine slot, call us about an emergency appointment.

Frequently asked Questions?

1) How much does a white filling cost?
White composite fillings at Swinnow Dental start from £154. The exact price depends on the size and position of the filling, and we confirm it with you before any treatment starts. Fillings are also covered on our Denplan Care plan at £30.50 a month.

2) How long do white fillings last?

There is no fixed lifespan, but well cared for composite fillings routinely last for many years. Size, position and habits like grinding all play a part, which is why we check the condition of your fillings at every routine health check.

3) Can you do white fillings on front teeth?
Yes. Composite is shade matched and suits front and back teeth alike. If you are thinking about reshaping or improving the look of front teeth rather than repairing decay, composite bonding at £325 per tooth may be the better route, and we can advise which fits your case.

4) Can you replace my old silver fillings with white ones?
When an old silver filling breaks down or needs replacing, we restore the tooth with tooth coloured composite, as that is the only filling material we place. If you are considering replacing sound silver fillings purely for appearance, book an examination and we will give you honest advice on whether it is worth doing.

5) Does having a filling hurt?

The area is numbed with local anaesthetic first, so you should feel pressure rather than pain. If you are anxious, tell us when you book. Our team has decades of experience with nervous patients and sedation is available where appropriate.

6) Is a filling covered by my Denplan plan?

Denplan Care at £30.50 a month includes cover for most restorative treatments, including fillings, crowns and root canals. Denplan Essentials covers your check ups and hygiene visits plus a 10% discount on general treatments.

Caught it early? Keep it that way.

The smaller the filling, the simpler the fix. Book online or call 0113 256 5214 and we will get that tooth sorted before it becomes something bigger.
