Root canal treatment is needed when the nerve inside a tooth is damaged beyond repair, usually by long standing decay, a deep filling or a break in the tooth. Left untreated, the infection spreads and the tooth may be lost. Book an examination if you recognise any of these:

Examine and confirm
We examine the tooth and carry out any investigations needed to confirm the nerve is the problem, then agree your plan and exact price before anything starts.

Fully numbed
The tooth is completely numbed with local anaesthetic. We aim to make you as comfortable as possible, and to you it should feel like having a routine filling. Sedation is available where appropriate.

Clean and seal
The damaged nerve tissue and infection are carefully removed, and the root canals are cleaned and sealed to stop the infection returning.

Reinforce and protect
A root treated tooth needs support, so a covering such as an onlay or crown is provided as part of your treatment, restoring full strength and a natural look.

The best root canal is the one you never need.
Most root canal infections start as ordinary tooth decay that went unnoticed. Regular health checks let us spot problems early and check your existing fillings and crowns for damage or cracks, which is exactly how root canal treatment gets avoided. Day to day, keep decay at bay by brushing and flossing regularly, chewing sugar free gum between meals, and cutting down on fizzy drinks and sugar.

1) Does a root canal hurt?

3) Should I have a root canal or just have the tooth out?
Wherever possible, our advice is to keep your natural tooth, and root canal treatment is how we do that. Extraction can look cheaper on the day, but a gap usually needs replacing later with a bridge, denture or implant, which costs more overall. If extraction genuinely is the better option for your tooth, we will say so honestly and explain why.
4) Do I need a root canal on a front tooth?
Front teeth need root canal treatment for the same reasons as back teeth, usually deep decay or trauma. The good news is that front teeth typically have a single canal, so treatment is usually in the simple category at £350, and a darkened front tooth can often be restored to a natural appearance afterwards.
5) How long does root canal treatment take?
It depends on the tooth. A front tooth with a single canal is quicker; a molar with several canals takes longer and may need more than one visit. We confirm what your tooth needs, including the number of visits, when we plan your treatment.
6) What happens after a root canal?
The treated tooth is more fragile than before, so it is reinforced with a covering such as an onlay or crown as part of your treatment. After that it can be treated like a natural tooth: brush and floss as normal and keep up your regular health checks so we can keep an eye on it.
