WHY ARE MY TEETH YELLOW?
It is rarely one thing.
Teeth naturally change colour as you get older, and everyday life does the rest. The usual culprits:
-
Coffee, red wine, curry, balsamic vinegar and dark berries, all classic staining foods and drinks
-
Smoking
-
A build up of calculus, also called tartar, which can leave teeth looking yellow
-
Certain prescribed medications and antibiotics
-
Swelling of the gum or face, or a suspected abscess
-
Age, which gradually darkens teeth whatever else you do
Worth knowing: if tartar is part of the problem, whitening is not the fix. A hygiene appointment removes the build up first, and sometimes that alone makes a visible difference. We will tell you honestly which one you actually need.

SAFE AND LEGAL
Whitening is dentistry, not a beauty treatment.
In the UK, teeth whitening is a dental procedure and may only be carried out by a registered dental professional. Salons, spas and mobile whitening services offering it are working outside the law, and the risk lands on you: burnt gums, uneven results and damage that costs far more to put right than the whitening ever cost. At Swinnow Dental your whitening is assessed, planned and fitted by our dental team, which is why it starts with an examination of your teeth and gums rather than a price list.
YOUR WHITENING JOURNEY
Three appointments. One much whiter smile.
01
Assessment
Your smile is unique to you, so we start by checking that whitening is suitable for you and likely to give you the result you want. We take digital photos and scans, and your bespoke whitening trays are made from them.
02
Delivery
Your trays are tried in and fitted by our dentist or hygiene therapists. We take you through exactly how to use the trays and the whitening agents, then your home whitening kit goes home with you to continue.
03
Review
Four weeks later we evaluate your results together, and go through the best way to keep your new smile looking that way.
Because the whitening itself happens at home, it fits around work and family rather than the other way round.

STRAIGHT ANSWERS
What it lifts, and what it leaves alone.
Whitening works on natural tooth enamel. It does not change the colour of fillings, crowns, veneers or composite bonding, because those materials hold whatever shade they were made in. If you have visible work at the front of your mouth, whitening can leave it looking darker than the teeth around it. That is not a reason to avoid whitening, it is a reason to plan it properly: we whiten first, let the shade settle, then match any restorations to your new colour if you want to. We will walk you through what your particular smile will look like at the end before you commit to anything.

Frequently asked Questions?
1) How long does teeth whitening last?
There is no fixed answer, because it depends on your teeth and your habits. Coffee, red wine, curry and smoking will all pull the shade back down over time, and teeth darken naturally with age regardless. What makes whitening last is looking after it, which is exactly what we cover at your four week review. Because your bespoke trays are yours to keep, topping up later is straightforward.
2) How much does teeth whitening cost in the UK?
At Swinnow Dental in Leeds, home whitening starts from £355, following a £200 cosmetic assessment where we confirm whitening is suitable for you and agree your full plan. You will always have your exact price before treatment begins, and finance is available through Practi Finance.
3) Is teeth whitening safe?
Carried out by a dental professional, yes. That is the important part of the sentence. Your teeth and gums are examined first to make sure whitening is appropriate for you, your trays are made to fit your teeth precisely so the whitening agent stays where it should, and you are shown exactly how to use them. Whitening bought online or offered in a salon has none of those safeguards.
4) Will whitening work on my crowns, veneers or fillings?
No. Whitening only lifts the colour of natural tooth enamel. Crowns, veneers, fillings and bonding stay exactly the shade they were made in, so existing work at the front of your mouth may look darker once your natural teeth lighten. We will tell you before you start whether that applies to you, and if it does we can plan to match those restorations to your new shade afterwards.
5) Can I get my teeth whitened at a beauty salon instead?
In the UK, teeth whitening may only legally be carried out by a registered dental professional. Beyond the legal position, a salon cannot examine your teeth and gums first, which is how problems like untreated decay or gum disease end up being whitened over rather than treated. If cost is the concern, talk to us, because finance options are available.
6) Will whitening make my teeth sensitive?
Some people notice some sensitivity during whitening, and for most it settles once the course is finished. Tell us if you already get sensitive teeth and we will take it into account when we plan your whitening, and your four week review is there to pick up anything that has not settled.
7) Do I need to keep coming in, or is it done at home?
The whitening itself is done at home in your own time. You come in for the assessment where your scans are taken and your trays are made, for the fitting where we set you up and show you how to use everything, and for your review four weeks later.
